We have postponed scheduling spring 2020 classes as a caution during the spread of the corona virus. Right now, it just doesn’t make sense to crowd 7 people around a hive of bees if there’s a risk to you or our beekeepers. Please check back here and social media for updates.
This is a class for potential beekeepers. If you already have bees, check out our Hive Management Class.
We’re ready to welcome potential beekeepers to don a bee suit and get in our classroom hive with us! We’ll kick off our introduction to beekeeping class by discussing and donning protective gear, lighting the smoker, then get some hands-on experience in one of the hives at the shop. We’ll look for:
- The boxes we use to house the bees
- The structure of honeycomb that makes up the bees’ home
- The workers, the drones, and the queen
- Eggs, open brood, and capped brood
- Honey and pollen stores
We’ll take a picture of every participant in the class so you can brag about your bee skills and we’ll answer as many questions as possible.
Limit 6 participants per class. Class participants must wear long pants, close toed shoes, and bring leather gloves. If you have your own bee jacket or suit, feel free to bring it. Protective suits will be provided for participants and leather gloves are available for sale at the store if you don’t have any. Even with the protective gear that we’ll wear, we’re working an active bee hive with the possibility of stings. If you are allergic to bees or bee stings, you cannot participate in this class. Class participants must be 13 or older and children under 18 must have a parent also attending the class.
Classes are held at the BZ Honey store, 405 E Main St., Tomball, TX 77375. Classes are weather dependent and will be rescheduled if the weather forecast predicts rain or temperatures below 65 degrees.
